LabourPains website relaunches with new translation and print features

LabourPains, the patient information website developed by the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association (OAA), has been refreshed to make it easier for expectant parents and healthcare professionals to access trusted information about pain relief during labour and birth.

The updated website offers clearer navigation, improved accessibility and evidence-based information to support informed decision-making. A key new feature is the ability to translate content into more than 30 languages, helping more families access information in their preferred language.

Using the translation tool

Since launching, we have noticed that some users are translating the website into another language and then translating it back into English using their browser or Google Translate toolbar. Unfortunately, translating content multiple times can lead to inaccuracies and unexpected wording that may affect the meaning of the information.

One memorable example saw “Caesarean Birth” translated into Somali and then back into English as “Caesarean Dynasty”!

To help ensure information remains accurate and reliable, we recommend using the website’s built-in language selector to switch back to English, rather than relying on browser-based translation tools.

Printing information leaflets

We have also received enquiries about older PDF leaflets, particularly on topics such as labour epidurals and headache after an epidural.

All LabourPains webpages can be printed directly as information leaflets by selecting "Print" (this can be done in most browsers by selecting from the three-dot menu at the top right-hand corner of the page). The print function includes all page content, including information within expandable sections and drop-down boxes, ensuring users always have access to the latest version of the information.

We hope these new features make LabourPains even more accessible and useful for families and maternity professionals.
